Nikola Tesla has ties to many areas, but Niagara Falls owes a great deal to him. Tesla was the engineer who designed the first hydroelectric power plant at Niagara Falls.

The first hydroelectric power plant at Niagara Falls was also an AC electricity power plant. AC electricity is what lights up and powers the world. This power plant began providing electric power in 1895. Even as a boy, Nikola Tesla told his uncle about his plan to produce power from the moving water of the Falls. Even then, Tesla was destined to be an inventor and engineer.

On July 9, 2006, a monument of Nikola Tesla was revealed in Queen Victoria Park on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. The monument shows the genius Tesla perched atop an AC motor, which was one of his 700 patented inventions. Canada’s Niagara Falls is also the home to the Fallsview Casino, which has a monument in front to pay homage to Tesla. This monument is a motor similar to Tesla’s Teslatron
